St Columba’s Shrine

The little building known as St Columba’s ahrine stands just outside the abbey church. It is mostly a restoration of 1962, but the lower courses may date from the mid-700s, when St Columba’s relics were enshrined. The tradition linking this chapel with Columba suggests he had been buried here in 597.

Originally the shrine was freestanding, with the rest of the abbey standing in awe of this tiny but powerful chapel. The ‘Street of the Dead’ used to terminate at the shrine.
